Shannon Estuary Cruising Notes

Entrance:
It is best to enter
the Shannon Mouth on the flood, but if entering against the tide,
it should be noted that the ebb coming through the Inner Mouth curves
round to the south-west, creating rough conditions in strong onshore
winds which can be avoided by holding to Loop Head shore where convenient
anchorage can be had at Kilbaha, three miles east of Loop Head.
Once through the gap between Kilcredaun Head and Kinconly Point,
it is only seven miles to the Kilrush Fairway Buoy marking the beginning
of the three metre MLWS buoyed channel to Kilrush Marina.
Cruising the Estuary:
Additional overnight berthing, whether anchored off, lying to a
pier, or made fast to the pontoon, can be had at Carrigaholt, Kildysart,
Fergus River Islands (Ballynacally), Limerick Docks, Foynes, Glin
and Tarbert, while there are drying quays at Knock, Labasheeda,
Clarecastle and Saleen (Ballylongford Creek). Ask at Kilrush about
the location of visitor's moorings.Attractive day anchorages can
be had at Scattery Island, and off the excellent beach at Beal Strand,
while 'ditch-crawling' enthusiasts have considerable scope with
the Fergus River, Bunratty, the Maigue River and Askeaton offering
some of the possibilities. With the detailed charts, after taking
the conditions of the day into consideration, many unspoilt temporary
anchorages are available on both shores for those with proper ground
tackle.
Facilities:
A cruising yacht's every need can be met in Kilrush, and Foynes
also meets many requirements. Even the smallest village will have
at least one general store, usually combining a pub. An increasing
number of pubs offer foods of high quality, and in every port you
will find people helpful if some special need has to be met.
